How Switched Reluctance (SRM) and Synchronous Reluctance (SynRM) Technologies are replacing traditional induction motors to deliver IE4 and IE5 efficiency classes.
Unlike standard induction motors that rely on rotor conductors or Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) that rely on rare-earth magnets, reluctance motors operate on the simple principle of magnetic reluctance. The rotor has no windings or magnets; instead, it is built with specialized steel laminations featuring air pockets (flux barriers) to guide magnetic flux. Because there are no rotor electrical losses (no copper/aluminum heating), reluctance motors achieve unmatched energy-savings profiles and remain highly robust in extreme temperature variations.
Unlike PMSMs, reluctance motors require no Neodymium or Dysprosium magnets. This insulates global procurement departments from raw-material supply-chain instability, reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) and mitigating environmental footprint concerns.
By eliminating rotor copper losses (joule losses), reluctance motors achieve significant heat reduction, extending bearing lifetimes and enabling operation under full-load conditions at high efficiency levels even at partial load ranges.
Modern VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) feature pre-configured software models for SynRM and SRM control, making system retrofitting simple. Sunvim motors pair seamlessly with leading drive platforms for optimal torque ripple control.
Our plant houses over 400 sets of specialized machinery and testing structures to guarantee flawless assembly tolerance and electrical integrity.
Direct positioning within Shandong's industrial hub ensures swift access to raw cold-rolled silicon steel, high-purity copper wiring, and casting foundry systems.
Securing a steady partner for high-efficiency motors requires factory scale, localized engineering alignment, and rapid logistics capabilities. Shandong Sunvim Motor operates within a vertically integrated industrial park structure, minimizing internal transfer delays.

Get answers to common B2B technical questions regarding synchronous reluctance and switched reluctance motor installations.
A Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) operates under a sinusoidal AC supply and requires a standard vector-controlled Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). It has a stator similar to a traditional induction motor but features a unique magnetically anisotropic rotor. A Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) uses a concentrated winding stator and a salient pole rotor, operating on pulsed DC power generated by dedicated asymmetrical half-bridge inverter drives, making it ideal for high-torque startup scenarios.
Standard SynRM and SRM designs cannot run directly Across-the-Line (DOL). They require a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) with appropriate software to manage rotor position synchronization and optimal current angles. However, specialized Line-Start Synchronous Reluctance Motors (LS-SynRM) containing integrated cage bars in the rotor can be started directly from the line, though they operate at standard synchronous speeds without speed variation.
Because reluctance rotors do not require rare-earth magnets, they are immune to demagnetization issues caused by overheating or transient overcurrents. This structure drastically lowers the raw material cost and ensures stable pricing independent of neodymium supply restrictions. They offer slightly lower torque density than premium PMSMs but match or exceed their efficiency targets (IE4/IE5) at a lower overall purchase price.
Sunvim holds certifications from leading international maritime classification societies (DNV, ABS, CCS) and meets stringent explosion-proof and ingress protection specifications (IP55, IP56, IP65, IP66). We perform exhaustive type testing, dynamometer testing, and insulation tests in our ISO-accredited Type Test Center before shipment.
Typical lead times for standard motor frame sizes range from 3 to 5 weeks. For highly customized shaft extensions, specialized terminal box layouts, or marine-spec coatings, lead times range from 6 to 8 weeks. All motors are packed in heavy-duty export-approved, IPPC-compliant fumigated wooden crates with barrier film to prevent salt-air ingress during sea transport.
